HEAD IN THE CLOUDS

For my final project at CalArts, I embarked on a creative journey aimed at blending different artistic mediums in the realms of art and design. The primary objective was to expand my skills and deepen my understanding of motion, painting, and color theory. This exploration allowed me to nurture my passions by learning and mastering new techniques within these diverse creative disciplines. In addition to my artistic pursuits, I was inspired to address the concept of stress in our modern, fast-paced world. I sought to explore how one can alleviate the burdens of a cluttered mind and find moments of serenity amid the chaos of contemporary life. This project represents not only an opportunity for artistic growth but also a reflection of the need for mindfulness and artistic expression as means of coping with the demands of our increasingly hectic world. Through the fusion of various artistic elements, I aimed to create a narrative that captures the essence of this exploration, fostering a dialogue on the intersection of art and the human experience.

My project was driven by a curiosity about the future of art and design. I realized that the convergence of traditional and contemporary mediums results in innovative techniques. Inspired by this notion, I conceptualized a "moving painting" – a blend of traditional painting and contemporary motion projection. My story revolved around the transition from day to night, inspired by the concept of time. Intrigued by how to depict movement in a still image, I delved into the 19th-century art movement, Impressionism. This style allowed artists to convey emotion through expressive brushstrokes and blurred imagery, akin to the windy scenes captured by Monet in "Women in a Parasol." My painting aimed to capture the essence of Cumulus clouds, influenced by Luke Howard, the namer of clouds, using the impasto technique. I was also captivated by Claude Monet's exploration of how light affects the colors of still objects, as seen in his Rouen Cathedral series. This inspired me to emphasize color and light in my motion/projection work. The result of my project is a fusion of art and design, weaving together traditional and contemporary elements to create a dynamic "moving painting" that explores emotion, time, and the impact of light and color.
